THE 7 UNTOLD SECRETS BEHIND GLOBALLY SUCCESSFUL START-UPS

Untold secrets of successful start-ups

Lessons from start-ups

For those at the TOP and those aspiring to get there, it goes without saying that you bear the burden of NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION.

The past 30 years till this present moment clearly reveals that the rules that govern your success have changed. The status quo has overstayed its welcome, we can no longer continue to massage it. CREATIVITY IS THE NEW NORMAL, the primary requirement of the post-modern world, and no phenomenon personifies this better than THE START-UP CULTURE.

The start-ups HAVE CHANGED THE WAY WE LIVE AND DO BUSINESS, and in the process acquired BREATH-TAKING WEALTH that surpasses the combined wealth of most nations, especially in the developing world. This global phenomenon can be found in business corporations such as Microsoft, Google, Infosys, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Even our NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY models the culture. It has grown into a multibillion naira industry INDEPENDENT OF GOVERNMENT SUPPORT.

How they do it, and THE VALUES THAT DRIVE THEIR SUCCESS is the focus HERE. Because AFRICA, especially Nigeria has been touted as the NEXT FRONTIER FOR ECONOMIC PROSPERITY,we must understand the START-UP CULTURE.

CAUTION! Small Ambitions, Moderate Manoeuvres And Incremental Solutions doesn’t cut it here.

We need to be acquainted with their BIG, BOLD and AUDACIOUS style of doing things, their new and challenging visions for the future and their pursuit of an INNOVATION-BASED ECONOMY that focuses on technology and energy.

Start-ups are young, and often times, so are the entrepreneurs WHO STAKE EVERYTHING on a SINGLE IDEA and pursue it WITH PASSION AND FOCUS, who combine artistic and entrepreneurial flair to create GLOBAL MAMMOTHS.

Just for the records- The inspiration we need to demonstrate bold, innovative and result producing LEADERSHIP will come from them and NOT FROM THE OLD.

There are SEVEN CRITICAL FACTORS THAT HAVE MADE START-UPS SUCCESSFUL:

1. Personal Responsibility
ITS ALL UP TO YOU. It’s a Do-It-Yourself world now. You must be able to bootstrap your ideas to success. BOOTSTRAPPING is the art of promoting or developing an idea or a business by initiative and effort with LITTLE OR NO ASSISTANCE.

2. Collaborative Effort
YOU ARE NOT ALONE. You are expected to engage in amazing collaborations. You have to partner with others who possess the skills and resources complementary to and needed for your success. You must be able to forge MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL partnership.

3. A Value-creating Mindset
ITS NOT JUST ABOUT MONEY. You must not seek rewards for which you are not adding EQUAL OR HIGHER value or benefit. Speak no other language than value and benefits to your constituency and stakeholders.

4. Lean Management
YOU DON’T NEED A BIG ORGANIZATION TO ACHIEVE YOUR AIMS. Big organizations can be slow and conservative while you need to be fast, LESS RISK-AVERSE and effective.

5. Phoenix Philosophy
REINVENT YOURSELF BEFORE YOU CREATE YOUR NEXT SOLUTION. Continually train, learn, make, destroy, remake and start over so that your experience can be different and better next time.

6. Personal Promotion
PROMOTING YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK COMES WITH THE TERRITORY. This is not the time for self-effacing leadership. You need to GET WORD OUT there about your work and your value. YOU is your best PR agency.

7. Passion
IF THERE IS NO PASSION YOU SHOULDN’T BE DOING IT. Life guarantees that anything  worth doing is never ALWAYS easy, but passion will sustain your drive in the heat of things.

To sum it up, Leaders and aspiring leaders can no longer subscribe to slow, cautious and incremental progress that always strives for consensus. This is THE START-UP CULTURE and we must embrace its boldness and its bias for innovation and gargantuan actions .It’s a life for the bold.

Get out there and start working. THIS IS THE LIFE!
