This invention will surely be a delight to chefs around the world, or just regular people who love to grill.

The Lynx Smart Grill unlike other grills works with voice recognition technology to cook food based on the user’s command. The way it works is that, you tell the grill what you want to cook and it will fetch the timing, technique/recipe from an existing online database. It even takes it a step further by telling you exactly where on the grill to place your food. And when the food is done or it is time to flip it to the other side, it will send you a message. There is still however the option for manual grilling, if you prefer the old fashion method. lynx-smart-grill

Officially called the Lynx Concept Grill, this grill incorporates voice recognition, online notification and seamless user interface to bring grilling into the 21st century. Some interesting aspects of this grill are that it remembers your method of cooking and you can simply ask it to cook your meal the same way. It also goes off after 30 minutes of not hearing any further instruction, so in case you somehow forget your food in it, you needn’t worry about the grill catching fire and burning down your house. How cool is that? 🙂

Lightleaf Bookmark

New technology is emerging daily and gradually some things are becoming the past. Years from now, the gadgets we are excited about will become almost non-existent except in maybe museums.

For people in countries where electricity isn’t as constant as it should be or who for some reason find themselves in places that are dimly lit, the Lightleaf bookmark kills two birds with a stone. It doubles as both a bookmark and a lamp.

Almost as thin as a sheet of paper, the OLED-equipped bookmark is both wireless and rechargeable.

It is designed by inventor Valentina Trimani.

TENNA – The Future of Devices

These days, our gadgets are under immense ‘pressure’ to function in multiple roles. For instance, a phone can function as a camera, video camera, voice recorder, MP3 player, web browser, note-pad, and so much more. This multi-functionality of the phone does not however push aside the use or the value of individual devices.

Now imagine your other devices can also turn the tables on the phone and also function in their capacity as well as a phone?

Well, you don’t have to imagine too far away…a device already exists!! It is called Tenna. And its job is simply to add the functionality of a phone to any individual device like your MP3 player, your laptop, etc. It performs this function by using voice recognition-based user interface. The screen-less device provides just the calling and texting functions of a phone when used on its own but can connect to any device through a USB mini port. Thus, for advanced function of a phone like: connecting to the internet, scheduling, managing contacts, etc. all you simply need to do is plug the Tenna into the device of your choice.

With the recent breakout of diseases around the world, it has been inferred that we just might be short-changing ourselves by ignoring the use of a powerful weapon, our smartphone. This inference was made by Eric Topol, a professor of genomics at the Scripps Research Institute in California.

According to him, “Most communicable diseases can be diagnosed with a smartphone. Rather than putting people into quarantine for three weeks – how about seeing if they harbour it in their blood?”

At present, smartphones are already being used to ease some medical issues, like the detection and diagnosis of Parkinson disease, skin cancer and any communicable disease. Through the use of specially developed smartphone applications, people are now able to record heart beats, blood pressure, sugar level, check their skin for cancer amongst other things. Take Parkinson disease for instance, through the recording of speech and movement, using your smartphone, the information gathered can be analysed and used to detect and diagnose the disease much earlier and more accurately. In Britain for instance, researchers have revealed that they have been able to distinguish patients with Parkinson disease almost 100% more accurately.

Close up view of stetoscope on digital tabletWith the use of smartphones, patients can already do without some unpleasant aspects of being ill like long hospital visits and having to wait long hours for treatment; as these can now be done using a smartphone. Our phones have incredible ability to provide insights into our lives. “The smartphone travels around with us everywhere. From it you can know when they are getting out of the house, how ambulatory they are or the speed they are moving through the world. And it’s often the last thing you touch when you go to sleep and first thing you touch when you are awake – so it tells you about sleep patterns”, says Deborah Estrin, co-founder of Open mHealth – a non-profit organisation that aims to transform the way that personal and digital data is used in medicine.

In fact, it’s been said that smartphones can be used for the tracking and early detection of Ebola. For instance, according to Estrin, using the location data recorded by most smartphones, one can track places infectious people have been and who they have contacted. And since this data is stored on the smartphone, the findings can easily be uploaded to a central database to track the spread of the disease, which in turn could help to issue early warnings and prevent further spread.



This week we examine another great invention of our time…the Oculus Rift. It is a cheaper head-mounted display created for gamers that operates with virtual reality. It operates in a way that allows players to step into another world (virtually) and experience their games like they are in it.

In March this year, Oculus was bought by Facebook for $2 billion and it is estimated to have an impact on the game world that is ‘off-the-charts’, never-before-experienced and simply out of this world.

The real excitement about the Oculus isn’t its use for gamers though…it is the long term impact of virtual reality on our everyday reality using gadgets like the Oculus. Now, take a min to imagine you having a meeting that didn’t require travel [and we are not talking about skype or any webcam application] but you can be present at the meeting without your body actually being there. Or imagine someone who had challenges with mobility [say someone chronically ill] attending a doctor’s appointment that didn’t require him/her to be physically present for thorough diagnosis to take place…

oculus rift mamaMedical scientists have already come up with some ways the Oculus Rift can be used to help their work. According to ‘Other Amazing Uses For The Oculus Rift’, this device allows amputees suffering from Phantom Limb Syndrome to feel “as though their missing limb is still present and even experience itching sensations and the like. By seeing a virtual recreation of that limb, studies have shown that these patients are better able to come to terms with their loss and adapt their brains accordingly.”

In fact, sometime during the early parts of this year 2014, a programmer whose grandma was terminally ill with cancer was able to use the oculus Rift to allow her take a virtual stroll around her home and the neighbourhood she lived in as she was too weak to do so physically in the real world.

Medical Scientists are also investigating its use in the treatment of Phobias and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. This is definitely a device to be excited about because, currently, it feels like its uses are endless and very impactful and would surely go a long way in easing some of life’s challenges for the ill and elderly.
